The Gardens area and its immediate surrounds have, in recent times, also become a mecca for connoisseurs of fun and fine food, and a number of highly acclaimed restaurants and bistros have sprung up in many of the old residential homes.

For a late-night party and a good meal, head for Hemingways at the top of Strand Street, but food fundis should make a special attempt to try the exquisite hai fare of Sukhothai in Orange Street, traditional Cape dishes at Kaapse Tafel in Queen Victoria Street and Italian dishes at Hatfields in Hatfield Street.
