Here, wildlife
can often be seen sharing the fairways with the golfers, such as
buffaloes, lions, leopards, impalas, kingfishers, hippos and giraffes.
The Hans Merensky Golf Course prides itself with the abundance of
wild animals on its astonishingly beautiful par 72 layout which
borders South Africa's largest Game Reserve, the Kruger National
Park.
It
features a truly spectacular layout and it is impossible to single
out one excellent hole. The short par three 8th hole, for instance,
only measures 155 meters, but the tee shot is an intimidating one
to a small green which is flanked by crocodile-infested waters,
with thick bush to the back and to the right of it.

Another
par three worthy to mention is the 17th, measuring 173 meters, with
a long carry over a big waterhole which is home to crocodiles and
a herd of hippos, all of which can be seen as one tentatively crosses
the hazard on a low wooden bridge.
From
1985, for seven consecutive years, the Hans Merensky CC staged the
popular Phalaborwa Classic, part of the Sunshine Tour. Fulton Allem
took the title three times in a row. The four Pappas brothers (Craigen,
Sean, Deane and Brendan), who all have turned professional and have
played for Greece at one time or another, all grew up here and learnt
their golf at this course. |
